Athletic Field Technician Position Description
Perform skilled and semi-skilled labor in the various aspects of Athletic Field Maintenance. Directly participate in the maintenance and preparation of playing surfaces, train subordinate staff members in techniques to maintain athletic fields. Follow operational procedures to optimally maintain the playing surface of the field. Experience, special skills, knowledge, and abilities to maintain athletic fields at the highest competitive levels are required.
Receives general supervision from the Operations Manager. Exercises supervision over technicians.
Examples of Important Responsibilities and Duties: Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Perform athletic field and grounds maintenance including aeration, grading, topdressing, seeding, sodding, trimming, field painting, turf care, fertilizing; apply plant protectant materials including insecticides, herbicides, soil conditioners and related materials; follow proper safety precautions; care of trees and shrubs. 2. Perform infield maintenance and repair work of baseball/softball fields including repairing bases, pitching mounds, batter’s boxes and transition areas of infield and outfield. 3. Perform tilling, rolling and fertilizing soil; construct new planting areas and maintain high traffic wear areas on athletic fields. 4. Identify equipment needs for each assigned project; organize work methods and procedures; ensure that the proper materials are available. 5. Operate a variety of specialized equipment utilized in assigned projects including tractors, power and hand tools such as chain saws, weed eaters, edgers and related equipment; assist in training others to use specialized equipment as necessary. 6. Check assigned tools and equipment needed for maintenance and repair; make minor repairs and adjustments; report major repairs to supervisor. 7. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Ability to lift and carry 50-pound bags of materials. Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: Three years of experience and/or college degree in turf management, horticulture, parks and recreation, or a related field. Training: Equivalent to a high school diploma with additional specialized training or educational training in grounds maintenance, horticulture or a related field. Licenses and Certificates: Possession of valid driver’s license. Ability to obtain state Pest Control Applicator and Professional Fertilizer Applicator certificates.
Working and Environmental Conditions: Field environment; exposure to dust and dirt, hazards associated with operating a motor vehicle, various chemicals including fertilizers and pesticides, contagious conditions including poison oak and inclement weather conditions. Physical Conditions: Essential and other important duties and responsibilities may require maintaining physical conditions necessary for standing or walking for prolonged periods of time; climbing, kneeling and stooping; moderate to heavy lifting; the use of arms and legs.

Position Title: Assistant Field Technician
Department Athletics: Administrative Position Summary Performs field and turf maintenance, equipment operations, and other tasks related to the preparation and maintenance of the athletic fields. This individual will communicate and handle concerns with the overall upkeep and maintenance of sports fields Athletic Field Manager.
Education/Experience
Bachelor’s Degree plus one year of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements Heavy Work:

Maintains fields in a high quality manner. Prepare athletic fields for play including striping, dragging and leveling fields, lay sod, repair worn out turf, spread seed, apply fertilizer, top dress, properly level and maintain pitcher mounds and batter boxes. Prepares fields and stadiums for intercollegiate and sports activities. Assist with related special event preparation, operation and clean-up as required. Maintain and conduct safety inspections of Athletics facilities keeps documentation of all inspections. Clean field maintenance equipment such as lawnmowers, sprayers, etc. Report all damage to equipment and fields promptly to Athletic Field Manager.
Assist in preparing and delivering needed materials and equipment to job site; perform preventative maintenance on equipment as assigned; inspect equipment before and after use for operation and cleanliness; monitor calibration of equipment. Maintain inventory of athletic field maintenance items and equipment Maintain cleanliness of fields to include the removal of foreign items and materials. Maintain and program irrigation systems. Schedule off-season work on athletic fields to make the playing seasons more successful. Operate and maintain the appearance of hand tools, power equipment, trucks, tractors, heavy equipment, landscaping equipment, snow removal equipment and other equipment pertaining to this position. Perform general maintenance duties as assigned when not performing athletic field responsibilities.
