Job Summary:

Implements athletic field and turf maintenance and assists in general maintenance and upkeep on all properties on the Cathedral Close.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Undertakes field preparation for sports and other field maintenance duties in a timely manner.  Under the direction of the Assistant Director, coordinates activities with/between the athletic departments, STA Fields Groundkeeper and Groundskeeper/Flex Crew.
  • Assists Assistant Director in implementing turf maintenance program for the Close and works with the groundskeeper/turf crew member to ensure superior turf and proper maintenance.
  • Under the direction of the Assistant Director, provides technical assistance on all proper turf practices and oversees the Integrated Pest Management Program for turf.
  • Assists Irrigation Specialist with maintenance on Foundation irrigation systems, including installation, maintenance and repairs. As needed, assists with a wide range of grounds-related tasks throughout the year including general maintenance, snow removal, leaf removal, Flower Mart, and landscape renovations.
  • Cleans and returns all tools and equipment to proper storage area.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Education, Certification, Years Experience):

  • Two to three years' work experience in turf management on a golf course, public garden, or synthetic athletic field.
  • Two-year degree in turf grass management or sports management preferred.
  • Must possess driver's license and have a good driving record and be able to operate vehicles and tractors safely.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (Ex: Best Practices, Teambuilding, Detail Oriented, Physical Demands, Work Environment):

  • Ability to work well within a diverse and multicultural workforce.
  • Good communication skills essential.
  • Ability to take direction as well as work independently as self-starter.
  • Ability to operate a wide range of turf and ground related equipment safely.
  • Ability to work required overtime, often with little notice (i.e., regular maintenance, snow removal, storm damage). Scheduled overtime includes annual events.

Working Conditions (Schedule, Physical Demands, Work Environment):

  • Normal work hours are Monday-Friday 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., although must remain flexible as work priorities shift and include overtime and/or varying shift hours.  Must be able to work required overtime, often with little advance notice (for example, snow removal, storm damage). Schedule overtime includes annual events.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in inclement weather-extreme cold and heat, high winds, rain and snow for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to perform physical work including bending, stooping, and reaching.  Must be able to work on feed for extended periods of time, and to lift, carry and push at least 50 pounds.
